Freiberg’s Ore District
The discovery of silver ore by Franconian and Thuringian settlers in 1168 spurred the industrialization of the region. As a result, the farming village Christiansdorf became “The Mining Capital Freiberg”. The concentration of the mining industry in Freiberg transformed the city into a center for mining research, geological sciences, and metallurgical engineering.

The mine ahd become famous for its wealth of silver ore. Today, the mine is not only used for training of students; it is open to the public. There are guided tours through the mine.
