On Wednesday afternoon an excursions is planned. You can take a guided tour through Terra Mineralia which is a huge exibition of minerals:

Terra Mineralia

We invite you to see over 3.500 minerals, gemstones and meteorites from five continents presented in the historical setting of the castle Freudenstein. In the permanent exhibition of terra mineralia the treasures of famous deposits in Asia, America, Africa, Australia and Europe are displayed on three floors.

The minerals shown in this exhibition are provided by the “Pohl-Ströher Mineralienstiftung”. The Saxon-born Swiss Lady Dr. Erika Pohl collected minerals for more than sixty years. In 2004, she decided to give her unique collection as a permanent loan to the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the world’s oldest mining school.

Freiberg’s Ore District

The discovery of silver ore by Franconian and Thuringian settlers in 1168 spurred the industrialization of the region. As a result, the farming village Christiansdorf became “The Mining Capital Freiberg”. The concentration of the mining industry in Freiberg transformed the city into a center for mining research, geological sciences, and metallurgical engineering.

The Visitor’s Mine

In 1919 the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube (“Ascension Mine”) had been taken over by the Bergakademie (Mining school, which is the original name and purpose of Freiberg University) to be used for instructional and research purposes. The mine ahd become famous for its wealth of silver ore. Today, the mine is not only used for training of students; it is open to the public. There are guided tours through the mine.

Please note: Protective clothing, rubber boots, hard hat, and light are provided. The temperature in the mine is 10°C (50°F).
