Fomenko, Anatolii Timofeevich

A. T. Fomenko wurde am 13.03.1945 in Donetsk, Ukraine, als einziges Kind des Ingenieurs Timofei Grigorevich Fomenko und seiner Frau Valentina Polikarpovna Markova, einer Lehrerin für russische Literatur, geboren.

Im Alter von 13 Jahren gewann er den ersten Preis in einem über die ganze Sowjetunion ausgetragenen Wettbewerb für Kinderliteratur zum Thema "Wissenschaft und Technik in der Zukunft". Mit seiner Begeisterung für Mathematik errang er mehrere erste Preise bei Mathematik- und Physik-Olympiaden. Im Jahre 1961 nahm er ein Studium an der Abteilung für Mechanik und Mathematik der Moskauer Staatsuniversität auf. Im Jahre 1969 verteidigte er dort seine Dissertation über "Totally Geodesic Models of the Cycles" und erhielt kurz darauf eine Professur.

Ebenfalls schon im Alter von 13 Jahren begann Fomenko Bilder und Skulpturen zu erstellen, die sich mit prähistorischen Landschaften und Tieren beschäftigten. Als Student stand er in brieflichen Kontakten zu M. C. Escher und studierte die Maler der Renaissance und des späten Mittelalters wegen ihrer Maltechniken. Ende der 60er Jahre illustrierte er ein eigenes Buch über Topologie mit ungefähr 40 Bildern, um die mathematische Theorie zu visualisieren. Dieses Buch wurde nicht zuletzt wegen dieser Bilder ein großer Erfolg in der Sowjetunion.

Seit Ende der 60er Jahre bis zum Jahre 1990 hatte Fomenko ca. 280 Bilder zur Visualisierung der Mathematik angefertigt, die auf über 100 Ausstellungen in der Sowjetunion und im Ausland breite Bewunderung fanden. 1990 gab die American Mathematical Society den Band "Mathematical Impressions" mit 84 ausgewählten Gemälden Fomenkos heraus.

In jüngster Zeit hat sich A. T. Fomenko auch mit der statistischen Auswertung historischer Texte beschäftigt. Dabei ist er in seinen Publikationen zu überraschenden Aussagen über die "klassischen" Darstellungen unseres Geschichtsbildes der ausgehenden Antike gelangt.
